IcoMoon:

This way cool little app lets you create your own icon fonts from vectors and from other icon fonts. Say you don’t want to use all the icons in a font collection, the browser still has to load the entire font. With IcoMoon, you can create an icon font just with the icons that you are using. Check it out.

There are two web tools that I like to use together to figure out my typography. It is not a perfect solution, but it can be quite helpful.

Gridlover + Font Friend Bookmarklet

Gridlover gives you some great sample text that you can adjust as needed and font-friend lets you try out what your web fonts look like in the browser as well as all the google web fonts. Give it a try!

Prototype:

This prototype is created with html5, scss, compass, javascript, and Zurb foundation. What is great about creating the prototype in the browser is that when it is done I can build the actual site on it. I does take quite a bit longer, but in the long run I think that it will be worth it.

Icon Font:

I have seen tons of icon fonts being created latlely. I have even turned a font that I created into an icon font for me to use on site. This is not the font that I created, but it is one that was created to go along with the framework that I am using. It is rather limited in it’s selection, so I may try another, but it will definitely work for the prototyping.

Learning something brand new can be a real pain. I mean starting at zero. I should create a website that links to tutorials, books, and videos that start you at the very beginning of a topic. Say a person wants to learn how to code HTML, well they pop over the launching pad and click HTML and they get to choose how they want to learn … video interactive or written and off they go on an adventure into learning.

Why am I putting this here, because it is always a search for me to find what I need and would love a place I could go to be launched off on a new technology or topic. For now, http://www.lynda.com and the tuts network are the first places I look.

A new computer on the way...and it's a Mac?

I have decided to take the plunge and move to a mac. I really like windows, but it just seems as a developer, I could really use the tools that are created for a mac to make life easier. I have been kind of thinking about it for a bit now because many tutorials explain how to do things on a mac, and they don’t for windows. This is highly frustrating. The thing that tipped me over the top is the command line. The mac is built on unix, and there are all kinds of wonderfully neat scripts that can be run using the termnal, but there are no alternatives for the PC. I tried to install cygwin to emulate unix, but it was a mess. Trying to figure it out though was good. It helped me to realize what I really wanted to do.

So there it is. I’m getting a mac…sorry PC.

I updated php on my server last night so that I can run newer scripts. It was a bit scary. I thought I was going to break everything but, I only broke it a little, and was able to work out the problem myself using:

<?php phpinfo() ?>.

I moved it up and down in my file structure to find out where the problem was and I eventually worked it out. YEAH!
